George Gittoes Winner of the 2015 Sydney Peace Prize
It is with great pleasure that Mitchell Fine Art announces its representation of 2015 Sydney Peace Prize Winner, George Gittoes.
While obscene amounts of money are spent on the proliferation of war, Gittoes spends his time, money and energy on teaching and encouraging the creative arts in areas of conflict, “and we are winning” (George Gittoes).
The Sydney Peace Award recognises over 4 decades of commitment to witnessing and exposing what has occurred in some of the world’s most troubled hotspots. From Rwanda, Somalia, Nicaragua and Afghanistan there are few conflicts that he has not witnessed and documented.
In his illustrious career Gittoes has received critical acclaim for his efforts as an artist and filmmaker. In 1995 he won the Blake Prize for one of his most recognisable works ‘The Preacher’. Gittoes work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Queensland Art Gallery, the Power House Museum and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.
Mitchell Fine Art Gallery will host a major exhibition of his works from 27th July 2016 until 20th August 2016.
