“This painting came into being as a result of a voyage to the New Zealand Sub Antarctic Islands my husband and I made in 2009. The history of those islands both natural and anthropological is interesting.

Up until at least the first world war, the Auckland Isles were incorrectly plotted on maritime charts and many ships wound up wrecking on those shores. On the Auckland Isles there were also some attempts at settlement by whalers and sealers. Although it was a practice among sailors to leave pigs and rabbits on isolated islands to provide food for shipwrecked mariners, it is believed that the pig problem on Auckland Island stems from the settlements."
