Yinarupa Nangala was born at “Tjulyuru”, south east of Juniper Well in Western Australia, approximately 800km west of Alice Springs. She is the daughter of the late Anatjari Tjampitjinpa, an artist and former shareholder of Papunya Tula Artists.

In 1963, along with her father and mother Yinurapa came in from the desert on one of the last groups of welfare patrols. Yinarupa learnt to paint whilst assisting her father at Kintore in the 1980’s. Her Dreamings or “Jukurrpa” include Women’s Ceremony and seed collecting. The designs in her paintings are associated with the secret Tingari ceremonies at the site of Tjulna, located south of the Kiwirrkurra region in Western Australia.

Yinarupa divides her time between the Kiwirrkurra community in Western Australia and Alice Springs. She comes from a family of painters, her brother Ray James Tjangala is an established artist and her son Danny Gibson Tjakamarra is one of the rising stars in the Indigenous art market.

In 2009 Yinarupa Nangala won the General Painting section of the 26th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in Darwin.
