Ningura Napurrula

Ningura Napurrula Gibson was born at Watulka, south of the Kiwirrkura Community, near Alice Springs in the Central Australian desert. She was married to Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi and was amongst those Pintupi people who walked into Papunya in the early years of settlement.

In 1996 Ningura Napurrula was part of a group of elderly women from Kintore and Kiwirrkurra who began painting for Papunya Tula Artists in their own right. Characteristic of her work is a strong dynamism and rich linear design-compositions created with heavy layers of acrylic paint. She participated in an initial Papunya Tula Artists exhibition in 1996 and featured in several group shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Darwin in 1999. Ningura had her first solo exhibition with William Mora Aboriginal Art in 2000, and participated in the Kintore Women's Painting exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW.

In 2003 Ningura was one of five artists to have her artwork featured on a range of Australia Post international stamps. The new Musee du Quai Branly in Paris, which opened in July 2006 features Ningura’s women's story repainted on the first floor ceiling. Ningura is one of eight Aboriginal artists selected to have an example of their work incorporated into the architecture of the Museum.

In 2007 and 2008, Ningura was selected as one of the 50 Most Collectable artists by the Australian Art Collector Magazine. Sadly Ningura Napurrula passed away in 2013.
