Kim Wilson is a Brisbane based artist working primarily with painting. Her extensive travels, in Northern Russia, sub Antarctic Islands, Africa, USA, Canada and small island nations in the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans feed a painting practice, deeply preoccupied with natural worlds.
Her latest series ‘Nocturnal’ focuses on her involvement in a citizen science project identifying animals from camera trap images.
“These pictures, designed to track the numbers and behaviours of feral and native wildlife, reveal a low lit, nocturnal world of creatures going about their lives, we, unaware of them, they unaware of us.
Through the process of compiling, cataloguing and painting, I ruminated on these scenes, drawn to their strangely familiar landscapes and the cast of characters that inhabit them.
A sense of alienation from the natural world runs deep in the lives we lead in daylit hours. These paintings satiate a desire for a moment of intimacy with this other nocturnal world. Tiny portals teeming with prowling feral forces, the worlds of which, we might for a moment, pause to imagine.” Kim Wilson 2019.
