Collection: Dorothy Napangardi
Dorothy Napangardi is regarded as one of the leading artists of the contemporary Aboriginal Art movement. She was first introduced to painting in 1987 by her sister and artist, Eunice Napangardi (dec).
Painting her father's homeland at Lake McKay Dorothy created her own unique style to describe these homelands. Her paintings shaped by an interlacing network of dotted lines, forming a micro and a macro study of the land.
Dorothy Napangardi's artwork relay the story of the ancestral tracks with the lines representing the salt incrustations around the dry claypans etched with the tracks of the women.
As the mother of five daughters, Dorothy was highly involved in women’s ceremonies within the Warlpiri society.
In 1991 Dorothy won the Best Painting in European Media, 8th National Aboriginal Art Award and the Northern Territory Art Award in 1998. In 2001 she won the 18th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in Darwin.
In 2009 Dorothy Napangardi was listed as one of the 50 Most Collectable Artists by the Australian Art Collector magazine.
Sadly Dorothy passed away in 2013.
