Christine Christophersen

Noted for her political activism surrounding local and national Indigenous issues, Christine Christophersen’s practice has evolved from a need to visually re-interpret these issues.

Growing up on her Mothers’ country in around her native Kakadu region in the Northern Territory, she listened to the elders stories and learnt to understand the complex Aboriginal kinship systems.

She became an active campaigner for land rights and a strident voice social justice, working in film, traveling and networking nationally and internationally, processing her stories, looking for visual solutions.

With her frequent use of allegory, she invokes new ways of highlighting the complexities of history and contemporary justice. Christine Christophersen was featured in the National Indigenous Art Triennial 07 Cultural Warriors National Gallery of Australia Canberra.

December 2008 was a pivotal time for Christine when due to personal circumstances she put her painting career on hold and her family’s wellbeing became her total focus. Her first foray back into her art is the group show ’Kakadu’ in 2017.

Her work is held by the National Gallery of Australia and in private collections nationally and internationally.
