Collection: Kimberley Ochres

A display of bold minimalist artworks from the Kimberley region of North Western Australia. Depictions of ancient sites and stories of country are portrayed through expanses of ochre colour, thickly applied with tempered precision.

The use of ochre is deeply embedded in the traditional cultural expression for these Kimberley Artists. Ochre is a natural earth pigments, containing hydrated iron oxide and includes yellow ochre, red ochre, purple ochre, sienna, and umber. The ochre is a hard crumbly rock, and the paints are made by grinding the rock to a powder and then mixing it with a fluid to bind it together.

Originally used for rock paintings, body painting, ceremonial rituals and as paint for artefacts the pigments have been used by Aboriginal people for millennia.

Artists on display include Freddy Timms, Tommy Carroll, Charlene Carrington and Rusty Peters.
